Shaniqua Kalaw’s passion for Production Design bears the mark of myriad interests she has fostered her whole life; from garment construction and spatial design, to illustration and sculpture, to narrative analysis and historical study, her accumulated experience in this field is the product of years spent steeped in literature and media that have first and foremost galvanized her—such captivating works demanding her equal fixation.Beyond working in productions alongside a passionate team, she finds that the kindred spirit at the root of any great project is a love for exploring the depths of every story, and more so, a willingness to iterate; a willingness to shed what you think you know for the opportunity to create something even better. It is a nervous energy that often leads to dissatisfaction, but inevitably leads to growth. Between major projects, she finds that she is often no less critical with herself; constantly tinkering with old ideas or remaking them entirely with new genres at the helm can sometimes begin to feel cyclical. And yet, within each void of a blank page she discovers a new energy—asking to be found, waiting to materialize—and so she tries and tries, attempting to reach perfection at every cost. It is perhaps a futile endeavor, but the greatness in her work lies in her desire—her need—to defy the established practices in visual storytelling and go beyond the confines of conventional art and design—to take human possibility to its extreme, and to be knowingly ruined by it.Â
